FRAHA Night At The Pepsi Center!
by posted 02/07/2010

Saturday, March 6th will be FRAHA night at the Pepsi Center when the Av's play the St. Louis Blues. This is a great fundraiser where everyone wins. Anyone interested in supporting our association can buy discounted tickets throughout the Pepsi Center. Each ticket purchased includes a pre-game skate/broomball game on the Pepsi Center ice and a chance to win a penalty box experience or a zamboni ride. FRAHA keeps five dollars for every ticket sold. Our goal is to sell 1,000 tickets. If every FRAHA player sells just five tickets we will exceed our goal. Take your family, bring a friend or go as a team. Details can be found here.  Feel free to download the flier and send it your friends. Questions can be directed to Shawna Sablich at .

Don't hesitate. Buy your tickets now. Let's make it a great night!

FRAHA Update
by posted 02/03/2010

Hello Everyone,

A quick update on what is happening at FRAHA and around our league. All of the CCYHL member clubs met Tuesday night and voted on the adoption of USA Hockey’s American Development Model (ADM). The ADM was adopted by the member clubs for the U8 and Squirt divisions starting with the 2010/2011 season. For the U8’s the biggest change is the emphasis on cross ice practices for all levels of U8. The U8 season will begin the week of November 15th with team selections and run through March 6th, 2011.  The Squirt season will begin the week of October 4th with tryouts and conclude the week of March 6th, 2011 as well. Squirt game count will be capped at 45 games. Games played against the Colorado Select girls program will not count toward the cap. Rosters will be capped at a maximum of 15 skaters and 2 goaltenders. A, B, C divisions will remain in place. Squirts will be allowed to travel to a maximum of 1 out of state tournament. You can read more about the ADM here.

On the home front we are working with the Big Bear ownership group on our ice needs for the 2010/2011 season. I know there are many rumors circulating about our program. I want to assure you that it is the intention of the Board of Directors to play at Big Bear Ice Arena. We have begun discussions with existing coaches and hope to have all of our coaches for the 2010/2011 season named by mid March/ early April.

We are planning two events in the near future that we hope everyone will participate in. March 6th will be FRAHA night with the Avalanche. Discounted tickets will be available to FRAHA members and there will be an opportunity to skate the Pepsi Center ice before or after the game. We are also looking at holding a Texas Hold ’Em tournament in April. More information to follow on both events.

Let me know if you have any questions.

Matt

PANTHERS MAKE SEMIS AT INTERNATIONAL SILVER STICKS
by posted 01/19/2010

The Front Range Panther Squirt A's played in the 41st Annual International Silver Stick Finals in Sarnia, Ontario January 15-17.  16 teams from across the US and Canada qualified to play in this tournament by winning their regional tournaments.  Our Squirts won the Squirt A Colorado Regional Tournament back in mid-October.  The 16 qualifiers were divided into 4 divisions with one from each division advancing to the semis.

First up for the Panthers were the Port Huron Flags from Port Huron, Michigan.  The Flags jumped on our boys early, scoring first but the Panthers responded and cruised to the 6-1 victory.  Next up were the Chicago Bruins.  The Panthers scored early and often, rolling to the 7-1 win.  Next up was the 2-0 Centre Wellington Fusion from Midland, Ontario.  They had beaten the Flags and Bruins by similar scores.  The winner would qualify for the semis while the loser would go home.  Front Range was up 1-0 after 1 and 3-0 after 2.  The Fusion came storming back to close it to 3-2 with 8 minutes remaining.  Canadian minutes and seconds must be slower than American ones as this was the most intense hockey our squirts have played and the clock moved very, very slowly.  The Panthers held on and it was quite a celebration for the boys to be one of four left after over 130 teams attempted to qualify.  Based on record and goal differential the Panthers were placed in the #2 seed.

In one semi, the #1 seed Southpoint Capitals out of Leamington, Ontario beat the #4 seed Whitby Wildcats out of Whitby, Ontario by a final of 1-0.  The Panthers in the #2 seed would face the #3 seed Jr. Mavericks out of Omaha, NE.  Our team fought valiantly but could not get the puck across the goal line as many times as they needed, falling 5-2.  Southpoint went on to take the crown in a double-overtime thriller with a 3-2 final.  After the championship game a 6 player all-tournament team was selected and Matthew Kopperud from our Squirt A squad was chosen for his overall performance and 12 goal effort.

"This was a tremendous experience for the kids,"  commented assistant coach and manager Bruce Nurse.  "It was a big thrill for the boys to experience hockey in Canada and to spend four days in hockey's home.  The kids had a blast, they raised the level of their play and worked their tails off.  It was a great team effort.  The parents also had a good time--We all learned a little more about each other!"

Congratulations to the Squirt A's for the great job North of the border!  Next up for the Panthers are the very tough Colorado Springs Jr. Tigers down in the Springs on January 23.  Next home action is January 31 vs Hyland Hills.  Go Panthers!
